Having not won in Geelong since 1988, the Demons had their best chance yet against the winless Cats having come off a comfortable victory against the Bulldogs in round 3.
David Neitz booted the first two goals of the game, but the Cats struck back and the first half see-sawed to a near draw - the Demons just one point in front. Neitz only had one more handball for the match.
The match turned late in the third quarter when Adem Yze gave away a 50m penalty which gifted the Cats a goal. It put them in front at the last change, but still the margin was just four points. With everything to play for Melbourne shut up shop in the last quarter and were thrashed as Geelong added 6.3 to a solitary point.
Nathan Carroll had held Kent Kingsley well in his first game, but the Cat forward booted the last four goals of the game - five in total - when he finally got off the leash. The loss dropped Melbourne's record to two wins in their last 21 starts at Kardinia Park. Ex-Demon Brent Grgic played his best game for the Cats, kicking the goal that started the avalanche in the final term.
Best were Heffernan, White and McDonald. Yze was reported for Unduly Rough Play after a behind the play clash with Cat Will Slade but was found not guilty.
