An early second round draft selection Gilbert was a promising defender who played a majority of the 1993 season but was in and out of the side during 1994.

With the introduction of the Fremantle Dockers to the competition in 1995 Gilbert's old Claremont coach Gerard Neesham was keen on reuniting their partnership and traded one of Freo's Western Australian zone selections to secure him.

Unfortunately for Fremantle the player he let go, Jeff Farmer, would play his best years in Melbourne before eventually joining the Dockers when Neesham was a distant memory. Gilbert would appear for the Dockers just 14 times in purple before being delisted in 1996.

Gilbert then returned to Claremont for two seasons before he became Peel Thunder's inaugural captain in 1997. He served in that role until the end of 1998 and worked under Garry Hocking as an assistant coach at the Thunder in 2004.
