Ellingsen made his debut as a 16-year-old for Richmond in 1912 after being recruited from East Geelong before crossing to Melbourne for two games as a rover the next year. He missed 1914 before returning home to sign with Geelong in 1915.
Had his most successful stint with Geelong and became a VFL field umpire in the early 1930's.
