The brother of Geoff Collins and son of Jack Collins was initially refused a clearance from Heyfield. Eventually he was granted a limited clearance dependant on whether or not he made the grade with the Demons. After three Reserves games he was granted a full clearance.
Collins was in the same car as Len Mann when they were involved in a serious traffic accident in July 1961 Mann's injuries kept him out for the rest of the year but Collins fared better and he made his debut in the final home and away match of 1961
He retained his position for the losing 1961 Semi Final team but managed just two more games in 1962.
Returned to Heyfield in 1963, then joined Yallourn in 1964 and won the Latrobe Valley League Best and Fairest. He became Yallourn's coach in 1965 and served through 1967 before resuming playing only duties in 1968.
Later moved to Papua New Guinea and played for Lae.
