Melbourne's first pick in the 2001 "super draft" was beset with bad luck from the moment his named was read out by Craig Cameron at the draft table. The family he lived with upon moving to Melbourne had a father who was diagnosed with cancer in his first year there and passed away a year later, and Molan was soon beset by injuries.

Despite having represented Vic Country in that year's Under 18 championships, Molan was expecting to be drafted in the 20's or 30's and was shocked to be picked in the top 10. He struggled through two NAB Cup and two practice matches before being sent back to Sandringham to come to terms with the pace of the senior game.

He then broke his leg so severely while playing for Sandringham against the Murray Bushrangers that he was left kneeling on the ground despite his foot still being flat on the ground, ending his 2002 season.

In 2003 he missed five weeks in the pre-season with a cartilage tear, then upon his return broke a collarbone diving to spoil a mark in a game against North Ballarat. His second season had also also been destroyed, and at the end of it was he delisted.

Re-drafted as a rookie in 2004 he started the season with the Sandringham reserves before fighting his way back to the seniors by the end of the year. Despite that he was still delisted again at the end of the season.

Molan then joined Frankston in the VFL and broke his leg in a practice match. He returned to their side after recovering from his injury but was plagued by hamstring troubles and played no more than a handful of consecutive games across two seasons.

After leaving Frankston Molan joined Spotswood and won consecutive Western Region League premierships - he remained there until midway through 2011 when he returned to home club Camperdown.

In 2015 he played for Williamstown CYMS.
