After more than a month without a VFA win on either side of their trip to Tasmania, Melbourne finally got back in the winners' circle and did it with a thumping victory over a side who had given them trouble in previous years.

Fitzroy were the better side in the first quarter, but they were unable to capitalise on their chances and Melbourne kept them at bay. Late in the quarter Dodds turned the tables with the first goal of the day from a mark.

The home side were again better at the start of the half but couldn't capitalise and Melbourne took control. They didn't let up until the end of the match and ran away with a commanding victory.
