July 1875 Match 1 vs St Kilda-University

Saturday 3 July - St Kilda

St Kilda-University 0
Melbourne 4 (half time 0-1)

Melbourne win by 4 goals

Goalkickers: R. Marshall, William Freeman, Bob Sillett, Edwin Towle

The two clubs had been forced to amalgamate a few weeks earlier because St Kilda had been unable to field a decent team. They travelled to Geelong the previous week before returning home to St Kilda's ground to host their first match as a merged side.

With no wind advantage in either direction, Melbourne took advantage of poor defending to score the only goal of the first half through Marshall in the first few minutes. They didn't score again until the second period but wasted a number of chances, which was blamed on the ball being light and slightly out of shape.

No matter what the issues with the ball were Melbourne ran away with an easy win in the second when they added three more goals.

Best were Sillett, Johnson and Kneen.
