One of the most sought after players in the Western District League, ruckman Bromell had his choice of several league clubs. He played in a practice match for Geelong in 1963 and trained with Melbourne midway through that season, but otherwise turned back all offers for four years while concentrating on farming commitments. It took visits from Jim Cardwell and Norm Smith to convince him to join Melbourne, but Bromell announced that he would only seek a clearance from Hamilton if he was guaranteed a senior role at the Demons. He played in a pre-season match and looked likely to be picked in the senior side, but when he returned to Hamilton to play a practice match against Geelong, a ruptured spleen ended his season.
When Bromell debuted in 1965 he was the only new player on the Melbourne list. He was initially allowed to play on six match permits but extended his record to 13 by the end of the season. Hamilton refused to clear him for good until the Demons agreed to play a practice match against them in 1966. Bromell returned to the Demons for a second season but a bout of Glandular Fever wreaked havoc with the start to his season and he didn't play a game.
In 1968 he was playing coach of Cavendish in the South Western League, and in 1970 he played in a premiership for Hamilton in the Western Border League before retiring.
