A half-back flanker who was recruited from Oakleigh in the VFA, Thomas represented the VFL against the Ballarat League in his first season and played every game in 1922 before having an injury interrupted year in 1923.

Returning to his best in 1924, Thomas was made vice-captain and played for the VFL against a Bendigo league team. He was one of the key contributors to the 1926 Grand Final victory.

He returned to Oakleigh in 1929 and played three years - including two premierships - before rejoining Melbourne in 1932. After that year he returned to Oakleigh as their seconds coach.

His grandson Leon Baker (external link) played 86 games for Essendon between 1984 and 1988.
