Walters won the Riddell League Best and Fairest as an 18 year old before joining Melbourne. He spent 1976 in the reserves, wearing number 45, before debuting the next year. In 1978 he was runner up in the Reserves Best and Fairest award.
In 1979 Walters was reported for spitting in the face of umpire Brian Bulluss during a Reserves game. He was cleared and said "I'm just glad to get out of it. I'm going home to feed my dog". The umpire gave evidence that a "spray of saliva" hit him in the face as he tried to explain a decision.
The tribunal chose to believe that the contact was incidental and dismissed the charge after ten minutes of deliberation.
The week after the 190 point loss to Fitzroy in Round 17,1979 Walters kicked nine goals against Essendon in the club's 29 point victory during Round 18,1979. He's broken his collarbone in the first match against the Bombers that year, missing five games.
Walters' tumultuous career had its last highlight in Round 2, 1980 when he booted seven in a win over Fitzroy but a broken cheekbone suffered in the Round 5 loss to Carlton sidelined him for five weeks and he played just four more games for the year and one in 1981 before breaking his ankle in a reserves game and missing the rest of the year.
He left the club at the end of 1981, appearing on Collingwood's extended list in the 1983 pre-season but not adding another senior game. Played Reserves for the Magpies in the same year.
