The younger brother of John Tossol was a former captain of Assumption College, and worked at the VFL when he made his debut. He had first appeared in 1980 Reserves games during his school holidays before being invited to play with the Under 19's the next season.

His impressive performances during 1981 and a slashing run of form in the reserves early in 1982 led to a senior call up and Tossol goalled with both his first two kicks in senior footy.

His father also played a number of Reserves games for the club.

In 2001 he was coach of Corowa-Rutherglen in the Ovens and Murray League.
