Debuting in 1952, Carroll was considered one of the rising stars of his side. He only played one game that year, and six each in the next three seasons.

1956, though, was a breakout season. Twenty games as a half-back flanker culminated in the 1956 Grand Final triumph. He added a second flag to his collection despite playing just ten games, and missing 11 weeks of the season before returning in round 18.

Hampered by injury in 1958, Carroll played in Round 1 but was not seen again until Round 12. He played in that year's Grand Final but was on the losing side. At 27 years old he succumbed to muscle injuries and retired.
