First cleared to Melbourne in 1931, Sambell didn't make his debut for another two seasons. In between his clearance and returning to the VFL in 1933 he played at Yallourn, before transferring to the city in his job as a teacher.

A wingman or half-forward he remained on the senior list in 1935 but a dislocated shoulder in the pre-season delayed his start to the year and didn't play another league match. He trained with Hawthorn in the 1936 pre-season before joining VFA side Camberwell.

He later coached Glen Iris. His younger brother Harvey trained with South Melbourne in 1941.
