The brother of Fred Sheahan debuted for the club in the 1893 VFA season and played until the end of 1894. He was retired when a raft of injuries forced Melbourne to turn to him as a fill-in during their second last game of the 1897 season.
After he ended his VFL career Sheahan studied medicine at Edinburgh University in Scotland.
In 1893 he is noted as having a shoulder injury with the suggestion that "it is just possible he may not play again" but was back in the side shortly afterwards.
His real first name was James.

Notes
May also have played in 1892. Some sources say he was also a first class cricketer but this doesn't appear to be correct.
