On a day where the MCG celebrated the drawn 1948 Grand Final and the subsequent Replay, Kevin Sheedy got the best of his protege Neale Daniher in their first meeting as coaches.

Essendon also welcomed James Hird back from injury, Melbourne conceded the first two goals and were catching up from there. While they Demons took a slender lead into quarter time, the Bombers kicked four unanswered goals in the second quarter to take the lead. With Todd Viney leaving the ground after suffering an injured hamstring it allowed the Essendon midfield to take control.

The Demons were still in touch at the last change but Essendon kicked away to win comfortably.

Neale Daniher said "We just need to step back from this and have a think about it. It's disappointing, there's no doubt about that. But we were disappointing against the Tigers and we regrouped."

Longmuir became the 16th Demon to debut since Round 1, 1997. Best were Yze, Leoncelli and Woewodin. Adem Yze was fined $1000 for wrestling.

Todd Viney hurt his hamstring, Travis Johnstone his thigh, and Jamie Shanahan was replaced in the selected side by Hayden Lamaro due to a groin injury.
