On their first visit to Tasmania for premiership points since Round 8, 1952 the Demons took on a furious breeze in the first quarter and conceded seven straight goals. Two majors at the end of the term opened the door for them, and with their turn using the wind in the second they kicked the first seven of the quarter to take the lead.

North were well held in the third quarter until four goals in the last 10 minutes give them a handy break. Melbourne kicked the first goal of the last within 30 seconds, and the next two to cut the margin to a goal.

The Kangaroos kicked away again and seemingly had the game won, before goals to James Harmes and Dean Kent in the dying minutes dragged the margin back to five points with 20 seconds to play. In the last battle of an epic ruck dual between Max Gawn and Todd Goldstein the ball was played towards North's end, only for the Demons to launch a final attack. Tomas Bugg gathered on the 50 metre line and tried to find Billy Stretch with time expiring but the ball was spoiled and North held on to victory.

It was Melbourne's highest losing score since Round 19, 1988 when they score the same against Richmond in defeat.
