Lowest score against South Melbourne and at the MCG

The 'Hot Socks' had returned from an trip to Tasmania sitting on the edge of the top four but played like they were still seasick, failing to register a goal for just the second time since Round 16, 1899, and it was their lowest score since that day. Their cause was not helped by light rain, but South didn't have any problems with the conditions. The visitors had a slight wind in the first quarter, and got four goals by quarter time.

South monopolised the play in the second quarter. Harry Brereton had kicked six for the Victorian side the week before but failed to trouble the scorer, well held by Thomas who kept him to one mark for the day. Melbourne barely got the ball forward, and even when they did they could only register points. Neverthless, the first half would turn out to be their best of the day.

The Reds had a brief period on top at the start of the third, but were unable to capitalise with goals. Brereton kicked a point and they failed to score again until the last quarter. In opposition, South put on five goals. The last quarter was equally one sided, ending with an even 13 goal victory to South.

Best were McGuire, Monk and Evans. George, Hendrie and Fitzpatrick all had cut heads.
