Melbourne win by 76 points
After a winless first season, St Kilda opened their second year against a Melbourne side featuring seven league debutants but were beaten comfortably.
On a hard, dusty early season surface the match started as a scramble where neither side could get into gear, but when the visitors got into their rhythm they opened up a match winning lead by the first break thanks to three goals in three minutes from Charlie Young.
Melbourne's kicks went to teammates, while St Kilda continually turned the ball over and the pattern continued throughout the afternoon. The Seasiders got the first goal of the second quarter but their rally died out soon after. When Leith scored two place kicks early in the third the gap was more than seven goals.
Best were McGinis, Moysey and Fry.
