John "Jack" Smith, was a rover/half-forward flanker who started his career with the Shinboners in the VFA, captaining his side to the runner-up spot in 1905 before joining Melbourne halfway through the next season.
Smith was cleared to captain/coach Launceston before the 1910 season but returned to Melbourne for another 10 games in 1911. Went back to Tasmania to coach Cananore in 1912.
