Mark Jamar replaced Darren Jolly who was excused from the trip to attend his sister's wedding. The side was also missing David Neitz, Steven Febey (bruised arm), David Schwarz, Alistair Nicholson, Daniel Ward, Stephen Powell, Peter Vardy and Guy Rigoni.
Despite fielding an even weaker side that the one that had been thrashed by St. Kilda in the first match of the tournament, the Demons put in an improved performance. In temperatures above 30 degrees, and humidity over 80, it was never going to be a great game of football but Melbourne overcame a sluggish first half to kick four straight goals in the second half of the third quarter to take a ten point lead into the last term.
Early in the last quarter Adem Yze intercepted a Chris Johnson kick-in and goalled to extend the margin, and the Demons led until Michael Voss kicked the second of three last quarter goals, before his third put the game away.
First year player Steven Armstrong was one of his side's best, and Brad Miller looked impressive when given a run at full-forward. David Robbins and Clint Bizzell also played their part. Bizzell lost 4kg during the match due to the oppressive conditions.
Adem Yze was found guilty of striking and suspended for one match. As the suspension could be served in the last Wizard Cup group match his unbroken streak of games was not affected.
