After an encouraging performance in their narrow loss to Geelong a week earlier, Melbourne broke through for their first win of the season. Their first MCG game in Round 1 had been a debacle, but they had an easier time against a Hawthorn side weakened by illness and injury. The visitors were better in the air early, and their defence held out well, but Melbourne's speed, marking, and kicking helped them take control after Hawthorn kicked four early behinds with the wind.

Melbourne's clever handpassing and wing play saw them extend their advantage by half time, despite losing opportunities with short passing and handballing. and in the third quarter Hawthorn launched a number of attacks on the opposition goal which were spoiled by poor forward play. They began the final term 25 points ahead, but after Hawthorn kicked the opening goal, Jack Mueller got two in quick succession to seal the result. With much of the spark out of the game, Melbourne went on to win comfortably.

Best were Les Jones, Mueller and Taylor. 19th man Sweeney replaced Backway (knee) in the second quarter. Longhurst replaced Gillespie-Jones (knee) in the selected side. R. Fischer (knee), G. Jones (ankle) and Ball (bruised thigh) were also injured.
