Almost two years since the VFL was formed St Kilda was still waiting for a win, and had their best choice yet against a visiting Melbourne side which had lost six games in a row, travelled to Geelong twice in two weeks, and had a weakened team. The home side also had several missing, and failed to score in the first quarter. St Kilda got the only goal of the second term, but in a tame match where the players spent most of the game scrambling they were unable to get any closer than the 10 point half time margin.
Best were Lanaigan, Herring and Wood. Moysey was stand-in captain for the absent Sutton.
