Impressed enough after being drafted to debut as a rebounding half-back in the opening match of the 2009 season, then went on to appear 16 times in total during 2009.
Converted into a forward in 2010 he earned himself nominations for both Mark of the Year and Goal of the Year in the Round 7 loss to the Western Bulldogs. Two weeks later he starred with four goals in the one point victory over Port Adelaide in Darwin. He kicked 13 goals for the year but his performances fell away towards the end of the year and he was dropped late in the season.
Despite playing 16 matches in 2011 Bennell struggled to make an impact, having less than ten possessions in eight of his matches and starting as Substitute three times for year. He spent most of his time playing off the half-back line. Struggling to find a permanent senior spot again in 2012 he had three stints in the senior side before suffering an ACL injury in the Round 16 match against Fremantle which ended his season.
He failed to play another game and was delisted at the end of the year, but was a surprise 2012 Rookie Draft selection by West Coast. Bennell did not play a match in his first season with the Eagles but was upgraded to the senior list for 2014 and made his debut in the first round. He eventually played 19 games in his first senior year with the Eagles, and 30 in total before being delisted at the end of 2016. He then returned to Swan Districts to continue his career.
Returned to Victoria in 2018 to play with EFL club Norwood.
