After spending 1925 in the Seconds, 13 goals in two late season games saw Duff set to play in that year's senior finals. Injury kept him out of the side, and Duff made his senior debut the next year.
He played just one season but made it count as full-forward in a premiership side, before joining Ballarat in the Ballarat League for 1927 where he booted 113 goals in his first year. He played in two grand finals - a draw and a loss - and won the league's goalkicking two more times.
North Melbourne tried to recruit Duff in 1928, but he was still tied to Melbourne. He trained in the 1928 pre-season, kicking seven goals in one practice match, but didn't play another VFL match.

Notes
Some sources list him as being from Ballarat but clearance reports show Murrayville.
