Recruited in late 1985 to play in the Under 19's and initially used as a defender, Campbell was given his chance to play as the Demons key forward in 1988. Despite booting seven goals in the first round of the season his output dropped off, he was wracked with inaccuracy and he never kicked more than two again and ended the year in the backline.
Over the next three seasons he moved between attack and defence, kicking a career high 22 goals in 1990 but also playing two dominant games on Jason Dunstall at the end of the season. He played eight games exclusively as a defender in 1991 before his season was ended with shin splints. He was traded to Footscray at the end of the year. John Northey later revealed he'd been linked to a move with North Melbourne a year earlier.
Known for wearing gloves during games (and trying to sell replicas) Campbell played two seasons with the Dogs before leaving for America to try his hand at punting. When he failed to land an NFL contract he returned to Australian and played two WAFL games for Perth in 1994 in an attempt to make the inaugural Fremantle squad. His season was ruined when an achilles injury required season ending surgery.
At the end of 1995 Campbell returned to Victoria, asking to train with Fitzroy in an attempt to rekindle his career, before being recruited by Footscray. He played one game for them in 1996.
