Promoted from the Under 19s, Kerley debuted as a full-forward in the last game of 1971 but was soon converted into a defender.
Late in 1973 season, Kerley was knocked out by Kevin Neale of St Kilda and played just ten more games in a disappointing 1974 campaign. The next year, he joined joining SANFL Norwood, where he played 132 games until 1980. Kerley then played for North Adelaide in 1981 and 1982.
