Biggest loss at Corio Oval
A week after registering their biggest ever win against Fitzroy, Melbourne travelled to the Corio Oval and suffered their biggest ever loss at the ground. Only the solid work of their defenders and the inaccurate kicking of the locals kept the game close until half time. Geelong won the toss and kicked with a light breeze, but Melbourne missed two early opportunities. Geelong was no better, only registering one goal from their first six scoring shots.
Melbourne's forwards were being well held, but they had a brief burst in the third term and drew to within a goal before running out of steam. From there the home side piled on 10 goals to nil to win easily.
Jack Mueller, John Lewis and Ray Wartman were Melbourne's best. 19th man Bennett replaced Taylor (bruised thigh and injured knee) in the second quarter. Foster suffered an injured ankle in the second quarter.
