Melbourne confirmed their place in the finals with a battling win over Footscray the previous Saturday, and Collingwood couldn't be displaced from the top two - so all the clubs had to battle for was a psychological advantage in advance a potential finals showdown.
Collingwood looked every inch the top two team, kicking four goals from 12 scoring shots in the opening quarter despite a strong defensive performance by Jack Mueller. Melbourne responded with a single point, and Mueller went into the ruck in the second term. With the wind in their favour, Melbourne attacked first but Norm Smith missed a shot from close range. They were much improved from the first term but attacked poorly, and each team kicked two goals in the second term.
Mueller went back into defence for the third quarter, and helped keep the damage down to a three goal to two quarter. With little on the line, Collingwood had more than enough in the tank to stave off a five goal last term and still won comfortably. They now had a fortnight off, while Melbourne had a Semi Final against Carlton the following Saturday.
Best were Mueller, La Fontaine, and Reiffel. Barassi was 19th man, replacing Roberts (shoulder) at three-quarter time, after two earlier appearances where he was unused.
