Melbourne welcomed Geelong for a crucial match in the context of the upcoming finals series. The Reds' chances of sneaking into the top four depended on them continuing to win, and for both other results to go their way and for their percentage to improve. The Pivotonians, on the other hand, were top of the ladder but only one win out of fourth place. They made full use of the wind, kicking 10 goals in the first quarter, and with a nine goal lead the match was over. Their cause wasn't helped by Allan La Fontaine playing after three days in bed with flu.

With their use of the breeze in the second term, Melbourne stemmed the bleeding but were playing for ride. After a quarter time conference between players which had to be broken up by the umpire so play could restart, a five goal to three quarter, kept the margin down to 55 points at half time. In the second half, Les Jones replaced La Fontaine in the middle, and each side kicked eight goals in the second half. It was Geelong's highest ever score against Melbourne.

Best were Mueller, Taylor and Jones. 19th man Bennett was unused.

The Governor, Lord Huntington, was present and met the players before the game.

Captain Colin Niven said "We were simply overwhelmed. Geelong was too good everywhere. Their strong ruck work, marking and position play were big factors."

Melbourne's season had been a vast improvement on 1933, but they still weren't good enough to make the top four.
