Melbourne's sixth win in seven starts firmly established them as top four contenders. The match had been postponed from the previous week due to heavy rain ruining grounds across the league, and Melbourne showed no signs of being affected by the extra week off. The MCG had recovered from the bad weather and was in good condition.

In the first quarter, Melbourne's defence held out under constant attacks from Essendon, holding them to two goals. By half time the margin was out to 17 points, but while Essendon remained in contention until the last quarter they couldn't get close enough to have a chance of winning.

Best were La Fontaine, Mueller, and Wartman. Charlie Longhurst was replaced by 19th man Bennett at quarter time after suffering two broken ribs and a concussion. He was later suspended for eight matches for kicking. The verdict was not handed down for a week as he was recovering from his injuries. He never played VFL football again. John Lewis and Joe Kinnear were found not guilty of striking and elbowing respectively.
