Initially recruited from the WAFL by Geelong after also training at Richmond, the ruck-rover/defender suffered a dislocated elbow in a practice match which delayed his start to the season.

Gandini was named by the Cats for their Round 3, 1986 match with the suggestion that he would have played the previous week if his clearance from Perth had come through in time but didn't play. He was cleared to Melbourne midway through the season, playing the last five games of 1986 before returning to Western Australia.

After four games with Perth in early 1987 he transferred to Swan Districts for 51 games, including their 1990 premiership. His career ended after one game of 1991. Gandini later served as Reserves coach at WAFL side Claremont in 1994.
