Carlton win by 1 goal
Goalkicker: John Ulbrick 1
Melbourne's winless streak reached nine, as they crashed to yet another defeat on their own ground. They had an almost complete lineup, and won the coin toss to kick with the wind in the opening quarter, but were still beaten comfortably. Neither side was able to kick a goal in the first quarter, but the umpire Mr. Murphy came in for criticism from many sections of the crowd for allowing rough play. Melbourne might have had the first goal after 30 minutes, but a shot by Ulbrick was touched through by one of his own teammates.
Melbourne displayed better teamwork and had more chances, but couldn't force a major. They had the first several behinds of the first half and eventually conceded the first of the game. Carlton got a second not long after and won what may have been considered a lucky victory. More than once, a Melbourne player touched through a kick by Ulbrick which had been going through for a goal.
Best were Aitken, Rannard and Booth.
Also played McKenzie and Sloman.
Notes
Some sources have Carlton scoring 0.6 in the first half.
