Recruited to Melbourne after 28 games for Port in 1919 and 1920, Coy became his side's first choice full-back despite being undersized for the position. He represented Victoria twice, injuring his shoulder in a 1923 game and missing five weeks.

A deceptively quick defender, Coy kept Gordon Coventry to two goals in the 1926 Grand Final victory.

He had a delayed start to 1928 due to knee trouble in the pre-season, and only played eight games in his final year.

Almost exclusively a defender, three of his four career goals came in a two week span of playing forward in Round 4 and Round 5, 1924.
