After an even first quarter in a special Show Day match Melbourne ran riot in the second term with six goals to two - including three in ten minutes to Norm Smith - and booked their place in their fifth straight Seconds GF. With a chance to win their fifth consecutive final, Ron Baggott chose not to play for a Railway representative side to ensure he'd be available. On the other hand, Collingwood was missing a number of players through injury, forcing them to try and nullify Melbourne by crowding the game and attack through the centre of the ground. Despite kicking into a light breeze, Melbourne kicked 3.4 before their opponents scored. Collingwood got the last two goals of the quarter, but conceded seven goals to two before half time, trailing by 40 points at the long break.
Melbourne eased off in the second half, allowing the Pies to storm back into the game. They cut the margin to two points before a late Norm Smith goal extended the lead back to nine points at the last change. A goal by Bill Sweeney early in the final term extended the margin back to 15. Both teams had injury problems, with Collingwood forced to leave a player in their forward line with a broken collarbone, while Melbourne had already used their reserve player before Ball (concussion) and Carr (ankle) were hurt, both remaining on the ground. Collingwood cut the lead to a goal, but missed an easy chance to level scores soon after and ran out of time.
Best were Cheffers, L. Smith, and N. Smith. Young (broken rib) was replaced by Miller.
