Carlton 1.2, 2.4, 2.7, 6.10

As Melbourne approached the end of their shambolic 1889 season, Carlton donated £25 and the gate takings of the match to help their financially crippled rivals.
Against an opposition who had won just three games all year several Carlton players chose not to attend, and most who did were not playing at 100%. Carlton's lacklustre early performance allowed Melbourne to boot three goals in the first quarter to take a handy lead. They failed to kick a goal in the second quarter but held Carlton without one either, and then stunned the crowd by adding two more goals in the third to take a three goal lead at the last change.
On the verge of a massive upset the Reds shut up shop in the last quarter, barely launching any attacks while the Blues ran over the top to pinch a hard fought one goal victory.
Best were Smith, Kelly and Mitchell.
E. Fox (c), T. Fox, Aitken, Benson, Brown, Carah, Claringbould, Farrell, Healing, Hallett, Kelly, Kerrigan, Lynar, Mitchell, Morrison, McArthur, Sheehan, Slattery, Smith, Strachan.
Some sources have Carlton on 6.8
