Cox played 16 games for Fitzroy between 1980 and 1983 before joining the Demons. He had been set to join Essendon, who pulled out when they thought the Lions' asking price was too high.
The utility player was injured on debut. When he returned in the Reserves he suffered a hamstring injury and didn't play seniors again until Round 20. He was rumoured to be leaving the club in early 1985 when work commitments clashed with pre-season training but stayed. He played eight games the next year, but a serious dislocation of the shoulder in a Reserves game in early 1986 meant he didn't play again after Round 2.
His three seasons at Melbourne only resulted in 13 games and he joined the Brisbane Bears in 1987. Cox was knocked out early in his only game for the Bears, then injured his ankle in a QAFL game, hurt his knee on his comeback, and his league career ended at the finish of the season.
