The son of Des Campbell was recruited under the Father/Son rule but only played one senior game, spending all of 1993 and most of 1994 in the reserves. He played in a Reserves Grand Final in 1993.

After leaving Melbourne he played in a Goulburn League premiership with Kyabram where he played in a premiership in 1996. He also played for the Hawthorn reserves in 1997, and returned to play seconds with the Demons the same year. He then returned to Tongala, where he remained until 2004 before being a playing assistant coach at Moroopna from 2003 until he was appointed senior coach in 2008.

Campbell's younger brother Blake played for Carlton between 2002 and 2003. Brad filled in for the Blues' Reserves in 2001.
