Melbourne re-drafted him but Gehling injured his knee before the 1997 season, missed the season after having a reconstruction, and was delisted for a second time at the end of the year. Joined Sandringham in 1998 and played with them until 2000, where he appeared in their premiership team.

In 2001 he moved to Queensland to play for Southport.
