'Moose' Henwood began his career with South Fremantle in 1981 and played 70 senior matches before crossing to South Australia to join Glenelg where he played in their 1985 and 1986 premiership sides and represented the state - and in 1988 played for Western Australia. He was then recruited by Sydney and began his VFL career as a centre-half forward, but by the time he left Henwood was playing as a defender.

After being delisted by the Swans at the end of 1991, Henwood played in the Northern Territory with St. Mary's. He was taken with Melbourne's first pick in the 1992 pre-season draft but only played one game and was delisted to clear space for the club to make selections in the Mid-Season Draft.

A barrister by trade, Henwood served as a member of the AFL Tribunal between 2009 and 2011.
