Thirds half-back in 1950 who graduated to senior football early the next year and played 11 matches in both his two seasons. He started his senior career as a defender before being used as a follower. He remained on the list in 1953 but did not play due to an injured knee. He first hurt it in a practice match before re-injuring it in a training session.
In 1954 he was cleared to North Melbourne after missing out on Melbourne's final list. Camberwell, South Melbourne and Richmond had also sought his signature. He spent three seasons with the Shinboners for nine games, before North cleared him to Sandringham before the 1957 season. He remained there until 1961 and was captain.
McLean's son Glenn McLean played for the Demons in the 1980s. Another son Paul appeared in the lower grades for Melbourne, then played one game for Fitzroy in 1987. Paul's son Hayden McLean played for Sydney from 2019.
