Cleared for free by Footscray after 20 games between 1973 and 1974, Wilkins added just 14 more in a season and a half before being cleared to Sandringham midway through 1976.
He played 103 games with Sandringham until 1983. Was named their captain in 1977, played in a Grand Final and was runner up in the Liston Trophy. He represented the VFA that year and in 1981 despite missing the 1980 season when work took him to Darwin. He signed with South Bendigo as captain/coach in 1979 but didn’t join them, and was also pursued by East Devonport before returning to Sandringham. In 1984 he played with Leeton.
He was later selected on the wing in the Sandringham team of the century.
