The former North Melbourne premiership player signed from the SANFL side under special consideration from the AFL after the death of Troy Broadbridge in the Indian Ocean Tsunami. He had previously played for North Adelaide before being drafted to the AFL. The Roosters initially refused to release him, but a compensation package was hammered out that allowed Motlop to restart his AFL career.

Motlop battled hamstring injuries during 2005, and with just ten games across two seasons he was nothing more than serviceable, but little more could have been asked of a player who joined the club in such amazing circumstances. He played in the 2005 and 2006 Sandringham VFL premiership sides.

In 2009 he played for Dunolly in the Maryborough Castlemaine league and was named best on ground in that year's grand final despite Dunolly losing, before joining Wanderers in the NT Summer competition. In 2010 he signed to play for Robinvale then joined St Arnaud in 2012.

He remained with Wanderers through the 2015 season.

His brothers Daniel played for Port Adelaide/Geelong and Steven for Geelong.
