Recruited to the VFA after twice finishing runner up in the Woori Yallock Best and Fairest in 1973 and 1974, Rowe then played 83 consecutive games for Caulfield and averaged 30 possessions a game before being recruited to Melbourne at 26 years of age.

He burst onto the scene with four goals on debut but failed to kick more than two again and by Round 17 he was out of the side never to return again, delisted before the 1981 season. Returned to Caulfield in 1981, then Woori Yallock in 1982 where he won another best and fairest. Also played for Warburton Millgrove.

In 1979 he had played for the Victorian Country cricket XI against the West Indies.

Appointed coach of VFA side Frankston in 1990, he remained there until joining Oakleigh in 1992. He didn't last the full season there before being replaced.
