The Demons were forced to visit Princes Park twice in a row, and suffered their second straight loss after a heavy defeat against the Bulldogs a week earlier.
Melbourne had the wood over Carlton, beating them once in 1997 and twice during 1998, but a blistering first quarter by the Blues set up their win. With intermittent showers falling the Demons couldn't kick a goal in the second quarter, and were never in the game. Four late goals flattered them as they dropped to 4-5 for the season.
Best were Viney, Tingay in his last game and Yze.
