Round 9, 1986
North Melbourne vs Melbourne
Saturday 24 May
North Melbourne win by 35 points
Goalkickers: Ted Fidge 2, Robert Flower 2, Mark Withers 1, Adrian Battiston 1
2 - Robin White
Having dragged their season out of the doldrums with a win over Footscray a week earlier the Demons needed to pull off a shock win against North to have any realistic hope of sneaking into the finals at the end of the year.
When North opened the game with the first three goals and then resolutely held their lead through the next two quarters it looked a bridge to far for the Demons but on a slippery day the Roos could never quite put the Demons away. At three-quarter time Northey urged one last big effort out of his players and they responded by bashing on North's door for 15 minutes.
Robert Flower had been quiet all day until kicking the first goal of the quarter which set the Demons on their way. They should have had three more in the next ten minutes but managed three behinds from point blank range - one from hitting the post - and when Jim Krakouer goalled the game was over. Three more goals followed closely behind, extending the margin to nearly six goals.
Best were Battiston, Hughes and White
