Having already been forced into a wild last quarter comeback against South Melbourne in Round 7, the Demons once again found themselves well behind trying to defend their unbeaten start to the year. They were lucky to get away with a win, Richmond outplayed them in almost every aspect of the match. On a muddy MCG the Tigers were faster, more determined and had the advantage in the centre in the absence of Ken Melville, but were inaccurate in front of goal and left the door open for the Demons.

For three quarters the Tigers were the better side, before running out of legs in the final term. Melbourne's superior fitness then carried them over the line. Early in the last quarter of the Queen's Birthday clash Richmond led by 25 points, before a seven to one avalanche of goals at the other end rescued a 16 point victory - and break the 1937 record for the best start to a season in club history.

Melbourne had Trevor Johnson to thank for victory, the Demons were holding a four point lead in the last quarter when he desperately marked a goal-bound shot on the line. Johnson was played as a late replacement for glandular fever victim Ken Melville.

Best were Spencer (who kicked 2.6 from nine shots), Gleeson and Barassi. Gleeson (cut arm) was replaced by Wilson in the last quarter.

The victory took Melbourne to the halfway point of the season - and into the interstate break - without a loss, and firming as red hot premiership favourites.
