Vic Cumberland (9th game)

On a wet day with the ground in poor condition the handful of fans who turned up probably weren't expecting to see a great match but with the ground covered in mud they were served up a shocker.

Melbourne had the wind in the first quarter and registered the majority of their score, encouragingly keeping Collingwood scoreless. Thanks to a strong ruck department the Pies were only narrowly in front at half time, but Melbourne added just two more behinds for the rest of the day. They had the best of the play near the end but couldn't generate a goal.

The best football of the day was played in the third quarter before the game descended into violent skirmishes in the final term, including captain Eddie Sholl being thrown to the ground and retaliating with punches.

With Collingwood desperately trying to waste time in the last quarter the umpire took the ball off them and awarded Melbourne a free kick but it didn't help alter the result.

Best were McGinis, Moodie and Wardill.
