Most of the Demons wins throughout the year had come as the result of a burst in the last quarter, so when they were well in front during the third term and running away with the game it looked like they were home. But for once it was their chance to slow down and let the opposition into the match, with the Pies charging home to fall just one goal short and give Melbourne their first win at Victoria Park since 1962.
Lightning fast, play-on football had taught the home side a lesson for the first two quarters and with the margin four goals in the third quarter and the Demons dominant the result looked safe, but then ten minutes into the third quarter the game changed on its head. Len Thompson, resting at full-forward, kicked two goals and by three-quarter time the Pies had kicked 6.5 to nothing and taken a five point lead.
It was John Townsend who booted two last quarter goals, and Graham Osborne who snapped over his shoulder for the match winning goal.
Best were Parke, Mann and Groom. Walker (strained knee ligaments) was replaced by Roet at three quarter time and Dowsing was an unused reserve. Davis had bruised ribs.
