A week earlier the Demons had only maintained their winning streak care of five goals in five minutes against South Melbourne, but any suggestion that they vulnerable against the Blues was dismissed as they extended their lead at every break to win comfortably. The scare of the previous Saturday seemed to focus the Demons, who were nearly unstoppable. Carlton, on the other hand, crashed to their fourth straight loss and were left with their chances of playing finals hanging by a thread.

Other than a short period in the third quarter where they had Melbourne under the pump, Carlton didn't show any promise, and were beaten handily by the Demon rovers. On a slippery ground where it was often hard to retain footing, Carlton played a short kicking game but missed too many passes. On the other hand Melbourne's long kicking quickly moved the ball to its key position players.

It was Melbourne's best score against Carlton since 1925, and both the highest score and biggest win against the Blues by any team for a decade. The victory, which equalled 1937 as their best start to a season ever, left the Demons two games and percentage in front of third placed Collingwood.

Best were Spencer, Adams and Ridley. Case (knee) was replaced by Wilson and Ridley (thigh) by Lane, both in the last quarter.
