Sitting inside the top four by a game and percentage nearing the halfway mark of the season, the Fuschias needed to continue a winning streak at St Kilda's ground which stretched back to 1924.

They didn't disappoint, but early on the match it looked like they were in big trouble. The home side opened up a lead of four goals at the first change, but from there they barely fired another shot and added just three goals while conceding 14.

St Kilda hadn't lost on their home ground in 1927, so their capitulation was a disappointment in what was expected to be a close game. A strong breeze had assisted the home side in the first quarter, and equally assisted in Melbourne's storming comeback in the second - but when the home side had their chance with it again in the third quarter they broke even with three goals to either side and were doomed going into the last term.

Melbourne's performance against the wind in the third term was even more remarkable considering they had lost Harry Davie with a split nose, and had Robert Johnson hobbling around the forward line to make up numbers after suffering a knock earlier in the match.

Dunbar, Tymms and Abernethy were best.

Tommy McConville was reported for throwing a ball at an opposition player and suspended for four matches.
